Another tribute to a TV show back in the day... but this reboot is blessed with the awkward comedy of Steve Carell.  He actually does a good job here, not too wacky, and comes out on top in the end.  The weird pairing of younger Agent 99 (Anne Hathaway) with his older Agent 86 is explained away as a cosmetic procedure done in the line of duty to make her look younger.  But I bet those kissing scenes were still awkward to shoot.

Meanwhile, I love Alan Arkin, who makes a great department head. And Dwayne Johnson's bad guy turn is done pretty well. All in all, a fun one to watch and a nice tribute to the original.

Movie #188 - Evan Almighty

Technically, this is the sequel to Bruce Almighty but it has very little to do with Bruce.  And Jim Carrey's not even in it.  But Evan Baxter, a side character from the first movie, gets his own God encounter in this movie. But instead of being God himself, he gets to play the underrated role of Noah.  Set in modern day, poor "Noah" gets a bad rap, but I'm sure it must have been tough for him to get people to believe him, even back then.  Now, talking to God is a symptom of insanity, so Evan's lucky he doesn't get locked up.

I'm glad Morgan Freeman is in this again, since he's an excellent God. (hahaha) And it provides some consistency as well.  The flood scene is fun, but a bit disappointing after all the buildup.  I mean, do we really need gazelles and giraffes for this? But the good guys win in the end, and Evan's family becomes stronger for the experience. Also, they adopt a homeless dog. Everyone wins.

And so they get to do the dance.

Finally... something with a budget!

I love this movie.  Mostly, I love the things in this movie.  Steve Carrell. Check. Tina Fey. Check. Mark Wahlberg's abs. Check!  There's lots of cameos too and tons of awkward situations that make you just uncomfortable enough to laugh.

This was one of the movies we saw when our daughter was still in the hospital, so since it made me laugh then, it will always hold a special place in my heart. And on the movie wall.

I won't ruin it, just suffice it to say that no one does ordinary-suburban-couple-thrown-into-extreme-and-dire-circumstances quite like these two.  And there are moments when I see flashes of my own future while watching this.  Hey, if that means our life is going to be this funny, so be it.

Movie #99 - Bruce Almighty

Whoever decided that Jim Carrey could play God for a day was a genius... I love this movie.  Alright, so there's nothing epic or life-changing about it.  But it's a sweet story about one man's personal redemption... under very unique circumstances.

Of course, he has to use his powers for the things that any man would, at least at the beginning.  You know, making his girlfriend's boobs bigger and sabotaging the competition to get ahead at work (bravo, Steve Carell, on acting completely insane in that scene).  Trying to skip out on the responsibility by saying 'yes' to everyone? Rookie mistake.  Sure this movie is a 'gimmick,' but it's definitely a gimmick that's well done and fun to watch evolve.  Also Jennifer Aniston is highly underrated, but very good as Bruce's unlucky girlfriend.

PS - Morgan Freeman is probably the best 'God' since George Burns in 'Oh, God!'

Oh, I looooooooooooooooooooooove this movie. Watching it again was just fun for me, quoting all my favorite lines and singing along with the four-part harmony to "Afternoon Delight." I just got to sit back and enjoy Will Ferrell, Steve Carell, Paul Rudd, and David Koechner be absolutely weird (and 100% bought-into their characters). In fact, that's probably what makes this comedy so awesome - you really believe they are these outrageous 70's era newscasters.

Oh yeah, and you get to add a little Fred Willard (and a brief moment of Jack Black).... sweet.

Movie #9 - The 40-year-old Virgin

It was nice to get a good comedy in between 28 Days Later and the pending 300. Nice for some Steve Carell/Judd Apatow hillarity. And my God, do I love Paul Rudd!

Anyway, this is one of the mountain of funny movies created by this lot in the last decade. Apatow, Carrell, Rudd, Seth Rogen... even Jonah Hill pops up in this one. And that doorman guy from Baby Mama, he's in this too. Add Jane Lynch (yay!) and Catherine Keener and it's a perfect cast.



This is the movie that made Carrell more than a side character, Kelly Clarkson a swear word, and virginity hillarious. Love it :) If you haven't seen this, take a peak. Totally worth the watch and you'll probably laugh your butt off.



I can't believe I hadn't seen this movie since we rented it!
